The African Safari
Nothing captures the traveler's imagination quite like the wildness & exoticism of the African safari. Every second website for a safari camp or tour operator in Africa talks of things being reminiscent of a bygone era & of immersions of the soul & such like. Whilst not being a big fan of such flowery language, I do have to agree that there is a certain romance associated with the magical theatre we call the African safari.
Emerging from the days of Out of Africa-styled hunting safaris into deepest darkest Africa, the modern-day safari (mostly photographic or experience-based these days, as hunting - thankfully - has started to make way for the more resillient style of non-consumptive safari we are talking about here) has kept a lot of the colonial-styled romance, but added to it a fair dose of 21st Century realism.
These days, the safari industry is a big industry with a big entertainment-style marketing machine behind it, and many people are now competing for the business of hosting the ultimate safari experience. With a glut of information and only the odd forum-based site such as Trip Advisor to base your decisions on, many folks looking at planning a safari don't know where to begin.
The FAQs on this site will hopefully help you answer some of the questions you might have on African safari planning, particularly around the who, why, where, when & what of private guided safaris...
