The past 10 years or so has seen a definite shift towards folks choosing to travel with the kids - something we both think is just great. Kids (especially awkward teenagery ones) seem to discover their mojo in the wilds. And family members usually end up discovering each other - which is all pretty cool too.
Whilst a lot of people will choose a safari for their families based on the prevalence of malaria or not, we would like to think with modern prophylactics being what they are, perhaps the choice should be made more on the type of place and the type of experience you can enjoy together as a family there.
Pottering around the bays of the Matusadona wilderness, sitting on deck with a chilled drink, 360 degrees of wild wonder view, teaching the kids how to fish for Tiger Fish, sneaking up to giant pachyderms drinking on the shoreline, or just enjoying each others' company over a board game in the galley - this is family chill time personified...
Drifting from one little remote tropical paradise island to the next is everyone's idea of paradise - being able to do it as a family is priceless... snorkelling, fishing, kayaking, camping, sailing, learning from locals, eating BBQ shellfish on a beach fresh from the sea - these are all moments of shared magic for any family...
Family time, combined with some awesome accommodation options (three bush homes), arguably the best game viewing on the continent, and some incredible local Maasai hosts make you want to return with the whole family again & again, year after year...
Not only is this little gem an A-lister for the amazing setting (treehouses, drawbridges, resident elephant bulls, your own palm-covered island, mekoros, etc), great wildlife & the cool people... it also has a feeling & sense of calm about it that we have personally witnessed bring families closer together than ever before...
These awesome riverside homes in Zambia are uber-cool hideaways for families looking to explore the region but not wanting to be part of the hustle & bustle of Livingstone town... lots of activity options, plenty of space, some great design touches, & a lot of beds make these houses a great family choice...
